Vaccine preventable deaths – 19 Tajikistanis

Polio has claimed 19 lives in an outbreak in Tajikistan. Between April and June 2010, 413 confirmed cases of polio were reported in Tajikistan with 19 fatalities. Thanks to a vigorous vaccination effort the polio outbreak has been brought under control, but unfortunately only after the 19 people died. Not much is known at this time of the victims; their age or circumstances surrounding their deaths are unknown. The only solid piece of information that has been reported in the media is that 19 of the 413 (430 according to other sources) infections resulted in death, a fatality rate of 4-5%. In contrast, the inactivated polio vaccine in use today has never been known to cause any serious problems.
