5 week old baby dead of whooping cough

A 5-week-old baby has succumbed to whooping cough, this time in Adelaide, Australia. The baby was admitted in the hospital on Saturday, September 11, 2010 and died on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. The baby was too young to be vaccinated. South Adelaide has seen a 30+% increase in incidence of whooping cough this year, with a total of 3991 cases  reported to date in 2010, compared with 2961 at the same time last year, which had a total of 5250 for the full year.

“Whooping cough can be a very serious illness and babies and young children are the most vulnerable to complications following infection, as tragically demonstrated in this case,” Prof Phillips said.

“Babies under six months of age are not able to complete the required series of vaccinations so they remain especially vulnerable to whooping cough.”

Dear Readers, I am deeply sadened by the lose for parents who have to cope with the death of a baby. It is frustrating to know that death from pertussis is preventable with pulic awareness campaigns. My baby cousin Dana McCaffery died, it is not the first loss of a baby in my family or extened family.
What is painful for the family is that Dana’s death was preventable. I have personally called on a good friend and family friend, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans who is running for the NSW Upper House. His first objective is immunisation, against the spread of disease. Arthur has also suffered a loss of a nephew 8 years
ago it was painful for his family and it was preventable he was electrocuted due to government stupidity in Western Australia. Arthur has a proved track record gaining $320million for mental health in NSW and a extra $10million for DoCs.Please check Arthur’s website campaign@chesterfieldevans. Lets fight together to prevent further deaths of newborn babies that are too young for immunisation. Good news but bitter sweet. The McCaffery’s have a 4wk baby daughter. Toni and David are finding it tough. I don’t want to see families go through the type of grief that they have suffered. Please help support Arthur he just wants to get back to parliment and get on with focusing on NSW Health issues and gaining funds through the NSW government. Let me give my heart felt symapathy to the parents that have lost their precious baby’s to Whooping Cough. Sincerely Mary D
